Writing Posts with Tags, Categories and Related Posts

How front matter drives everything in Blogkit: the difference between categories and tags, how related posts are scored, and how to keep your tags tidy.

Everything Blogkit shows comes from the front matter at the top of each post. Four fields matter most.

---
title: "Required"
date: "2026-10-02" # required, YYYY-MM-DD
categories: [Blogkit, Writing] # broad: shown on cards, used for filtering
tags: [front-matter, tags] # specific: drives the tag cloud and related posts
author: "Avery Kestrel" # matches a name in authors.yml
---

A post without title or date is skipped (a warning is printed while rendering), and draft: true keeps a post out of the archive and tags.

Categories Versus Tags

Categories Tags
Scope Broad: language, subject, type Specific: the concept in this post
Example Tutorial, R front-matter, pagination
Where you see them Cards and the homepage category cloud Sidebar tag cloud, tags page, post footer
How many 1 to 3 3 to 6

Keep tags lowercase and hyphenated (related-posts, not Related Posts). Blogkit lowercases them anyway, but consistent names mean one tag instead of three near-duplicates.

Where Tags Appear

  • The sidebar tag cloud, sized by how many posts use each tag.
  • The tags page: click a tag to see its posts, ten per page by default (per-page: in _quarto.yml).
  • A Tags row under each post body.

See how this connects to authors and to publishing.
